The Anglo-Saxon Evidence

Pre-Norman Instances of “Wilk” in Anglo-Saxon Place-Names

While the Gaelic examples of Uilcin place-names are intriguing, the English examples are compelling. There are at least six instances of a form of Wilke or Wilkins in pre-Norman place-names in Anglo-Saxon England and four of these expressly appear in the Domesday Book’s AD 1086 accounting of Anglo-Saxon estates taken by the conquest twenty years prior. Another is impliedly listed in the same source. There is also one “wilkin” place-name in Wales that is commonly identified with the Norman descendants of Robert de Wintona, but as will be shown, there are justifiable reasons to believe this too may be a mistaken corruption of an earlier Norse naming influence.
